| Name: Water Release: Vapor Corrosion Jutsu Rank: C Cost: 45 Type: Ninjutsu Range: 30 ft. long cone Element: water Description: Hatsuga does the correct hand signs then holds his cupped palm to his mouth, blowing out a stream of fine mist. The mist is extremely salty and somewhat acidic. Metal objects hit by the vapor will corrode and become enveloped by a thick coating of tarnish or rust. Most metal weapons will get pits in their cutting edge and will cut poorly until resharpened. Thin items, such as senbon or ninja wire will disintegrate completely. Due to the extreme saltiness of the mist anyone blasted directly in the face will have a stinging sensation in their eyes, but no permanent damage. The mist is translucent and obscures vision slightly.

| id rename the jutsu Water release: Corrosive Steam Jutsu but its up to you hatsuga. i like the idea but id remind you that the whole corrive bit of your jutsu needs a bit of explaining due to the manner in which it corrodes metal. if it does that then it WOULD harm peoples skin etc. Explain in full and ill approve.
cheers

| I can explain it in several ways.
1) Explanation by game balance: A metal destroying jutsu is more specified than a destroy-everything-acid-jutsu. Acids tend to be pretty broken, and not really water element. I'll gladly lower it to D rank if you think it's level is too high.
2) Explanation by Symbolism: Anthropological theory teaches that magic (and by extension the magic-like-jutsu) are based off sympathetic or symbolic control over the forces of nature.
From this perspective water rusts and tarnishes metal. Salt water rusts iron more quickly than pure water. Exposed metals near sea spray or harbor mist tend to have serious corrosion problems. Salt slush in the winter rusts out car mufflers. The other not-quite-natural-but-close agent of corrosion is acid rain, which does a number on exposed metal in proximity to certain factories.
Neither acid rain nor salt water melt flesh but, over time they do wreck metals. This jutsu summons forth a chakra based mix of salty mist and acid rain.
3) Explanation by Chemistry and Chakra: The corrosion of metals is caused by the bonding of oxygen atoms to metal atoms creating metal oxide molecules. Water acts as a medium facilitating electron transfer between the metal and the oxygen. Electron transfer is accelerated by an electrolyte, in this case being salt dissolved in water. In the case of rusting iron and similar metals hydroxide ions are produced, slowing down the process. Hydroxide ions, being base, can be counteracted by acidity in the water. Notice that the acid doesn't do most of the work, it just assists in the bonding of atmospheric oxygen.
Living things, being composed almost entirely of nonmetals (hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and carbon) and having stable organic chemistry are almost totally immune to this sort of oxidization.
This all works, and works quickly, because chakra can mess with the laws of physics and chemical reactions. Fire, as we know it, is a rapid exothermic oxidation reaction, usually with a hydrocarbon based fuel. How does Sasuke produce a fireball? Did he drink a quart of kerosene before heading into battle? Did he somehow store a thousand cubic feet of methane at atmospheric pressure in his lungs?
No, the jutsu and/or chakra itself substitutes for the chemical reaction creating a burning without fuel, a chemical reaction without all the proper chemicals.
Hatsuga's Vapor Corrosion Jutsu: ditto.
I'll stick with "vapor corrosion" because it's more of a mist or fog, cold and clammy. The word steam suggests a heated form of water vapor. | |
