I just want to apologize in advance to the admins who are reading this. While waiting for the CP system to be finalized (or as I take it, eliminated) I kept adding stuff to the character's backstory and it's gotten kind of epic, which wouldn't be so weird if my character wasn't an academy student.

Question for the admins/mods. Which is more annoying: an AS with 1 page of jutsu and an 8 page back story or an S-Rank Missing nin with 2 paragraphs of life story and 10 pages of jutsus?

Here it goes.

Name: Hatsuga Takekoku
Age: 12
Gender: Male
Clan: Takekoku

Appearance Hatsugai is a tall boy for his age (5'5") with skinny legs and strong shoulders. His eyes are dark grey, his hair is dark brown and worn in a simple shoulder length ponytail. His facial features are somewhat square. He has tanned skin and large, calloused hands. One of his front incisors is chipped due to an accident he had sparring with his father.

Hatsuga dresses in simple clothing of rough weave linen, unbleached and undyed. His normal outfit is a shirt and pants with high cuffs. He owns a long jacket and wide straw hat for rough weather. He's usually either barefoot or wearing woven grass sandals. He has a white headband with a bamboo leaf and a green stalk of rice worn above his right ear. For formal occasions he owns an inexpensive olive green kimono. He rarely wears it.

In a leather holster strapped to his left thigh is a sickle. It's not a fighting sickle or kama, just the sort of plain utility sickle used to harvest millet. Strapped to his right thigh is his trick pouch containing one or two kunai, throwing darts, smoke bombs, fire bombs, flash bombs, exploding tags, shark hooks and some wire.

He carries a four-foot long object wrapped conspicuously in emerald green fabric and tied in twine. Touching the fabric will reveal that it's slightly damp. There's nothing inside but an unassuming, freshly cut stalk of bamboo inside.

Personality Hatsuga's a little quiet but friendly and he likes to help people. He's also a hard worker with an optimistic sense of adventure and exploration. Hatsuga is an idealist at heart. He is on a vaguely defined, self-imposed mission to save the world from the ninja and the ninja from themselves. This does give him a slightly cynical edge when it comes to him superiors, the academy and the whole concept of nationalism and militarism but he works hard hoping to lead by example, climb the ladder and improve the system from the inside.

His lowly origins make him sympathetic to underdogs and the poor and the natural enemy of elitists.

Hatsuga enjoys life's simple pleasures and believes that complex minds function best with a simple life. He enjoys reading, vegetable gardening and strategy games. He has a generally calm personality and a steady inner strength. He's also detail oriented and strategic though his lack of a ruthless stops him from using these aspects to their full potential. Hatsuda accepts killing as a necessity of the ninja lifestyle but would like to keep bloodshed to a minimum.

His more immediate goals are to do well at the academy and find a closer location for his family to live. He'd also like to figure out what's going on with that strange summoning scroll he stole. He's also been thinking of getting in touch with the Akimichis to inform them about the ultimate fate of one of their relatives but he's hesitant due to the delicacy of the issue.

Village Newly arrived in Konohagakure. Originally from Daito Town, Land of Rain.

Rank Academy Student.

Special Characteristics

Hatsuga is skilled in agriculture, weaving, botany, fishing, shogi strategy and cooking. His specialty is dumplings.

Hatsuga was trained by his mother in herbalism and folk medicine.

Hatsuga has thorough training in the use of swords, staves and similar weapons. He wields them with fast , efficient movements.

Hatsuga possesses an old summoning scroll of indeterminate origin and use.

Elements: Earth, Water (Doton, Suiton)

Jutsus

Bunshin no Jutsu - Clone Technique
E Rank
Chakra Cost 11
Ninjitsu - basic
Bunshin no Jutsu is a Ninjutsu technique which every ninja learns at the Ninja Academy. The Bunshin technique creates a copy of the ninja without substance. The copy resembles the ninja in every way. This clone can function as a distraction or as means to confuse one's opponent. As soon the Bunshin gets attacked or comes into contact with an opponent, it will disperse.

Kyosha Stance Combo
E Rank
Chakra Cost: 5
Taijutsu
Named after the shogi piece (basic lance) Kyosha Stance Combo is a horizontal slash technique that delivers rapid blows or slashes to the shins, knees and hip joints with a final jab to the lower back.

Living Weapon Chakra Extention Technique
E Rank
Chakra Cost 16
Ninjutsu - taijutsu enhancer
Using the natural tendency of chakra to flow through and from living organisms Hatsuga extends his chakra into his bamboo stick. The stick becomes an extension of himself. The weapon can be wielded with exceptional grace, speed and accuracy. Since bamboo has an exceptional natural growth rate the life chakra imbued in it helps it repair itself quickly. The bamboo is connected to Hatsuga's hand with a thin, flexible chord of vital chakra making it difficult to disarm him.

Outflowing Water Meditation Technique
E Rank
Chakra Cost 10
water element ninjutsu
Sending life giving chakra though water Hatsuga can purify it from pollution or particulates, kill microbes and diseases in the water and drive off any parasites and unwanted creatures living in the water.

Starling Wing Blocking Maneuver.
E Rank
Chakra Cost 5
Taijutsu
Using a weapon Hatsuga can deflect and dodge multiple light thrown weapons or arrows while circling the enemy. The blocking weapon must be 2 to 4 feet long and relatively light such as a katana, shortsword or stick.

Bamboo Blade Fouling Technique
D Rank
Chakra Cost 36
Ninjitsu enhanced taijutsu, earth/water element
Hatsuga blocks a bladed close combat weapon, such as an axe or sword with his bamboo stick. The blade appears to cut through the stick but in actuality it cuts part way into the stick and a section of the bamboo breaks off, stuck fast to the blade. The bamboo grows back to it's original length. Making several consecutive parries weighs the enemy's blade down with bamboo and renders it less effective by covering the cutting edge and ruining it's aerodynamic profile. The hunks of bamboo can be pried off with a modest effort but in the heat of battle this is understandably distracting.

Water Doll Technique
D Rank
Chakra Cost 30
Ninjutsu water element
Water Doll Technique is a lesser version of Water Clone Technique (Mizu Bunshin no Jutsu). Unlike water clones water dolls cannot be easily mistaken for their creators. They appear similar to their creator but constantly seem to be soaking wet and they leave a puddle wherever they go. They're slightly translucent and they make a sloshing sound whenever they move. They cannot be created out of thin air and must use a nearby water supply of sufficient volume.

Wound Soothing Technique
D Rank
Chakra Cost 24
Medical jutsu
This medical technique causes a sensation of coolness and relief that soothes pain and reduces swelling. It does not actually regenerate flesh or heal wounds. There is a danger of misuse if someone treated by Wound Soothing Technique mistakes feeling better for being better and aggravates their wounds through too much effort.

Keima Stance Combo
D Rank
Chakra cost:20
Taijutsu
Named after the shogi piece (basic knight) Keima Stance Combo closes in with five or 6 vertical strikes and jabs to the chest area followed by three closer defensive strive that let the user get within arms distance of their opponent. The combo ends in a kidney punch and a powerful leverage grapple. If perfomed properly the opponent will be tossed several feet behind the user and land face down.

Secret Whisper of Leaves Technique
Type:Ninjutsu
Cost:39
Rank:D
By spreading a matrix of chakra through his feet and into the surrounding grass, roots and trees Hatsuga becomes hyperaware of every plant in a 25 foot radius. If anyone so much as knocks a leaf off a tree of crushes a blade of grass he can sense it as a gentle sound-like mental stimulus. He can also tell the difference between natural motion in plants, such as wind or chewing insects, and unnatural motion, such as a kunai cutting through the treetops.

Name: Bamboo Rapid Generation
Rank:C
Type:Ninjutsu
Chakra Cost:50
Element:Plant (water/earth)
Description: Using techniques similar to medical jutsu Hatsuga causes the cells within his green bamboo staff or a living bamboo plant to multiply rapidly. The bamboo extends lengthwise but gains little girth. At it's highest growth speed it hits with the force of an average kick. Hatsuga has limited control over the direction of flexion in which the bamboo grows. As a side effect of his research Hatsuga can also cause bamboo to grow rapidly but with a brittle cell structure. This jutsu can only effect bamboo within arm's reach of Hatsuga.

Story In the Land of Water there's a small farming town called Daito Town. Directly north of Daito Town is a marsh where farmers cultivated snails, fish, millet and rice. In this marsh lived Yamada Takekoku and his wife Nishiki. They lived in a dilapidated shack with their son Hatsuga.

Yamada was a small, scruffy man whose shabby exterior hid a keen and crafty intelligence. He was quite lazy, but his mind was always thinking. If he had been born in a position above the one he'd been born in he would have gone far and lived fat as a bureaucrat, a fast talking merchant or a minor noble. Instead fate dealt him a peasant's lot in life, a lot which he didn't have the back for.

Nishiki was not quite as smart as her husband but she was a hard worker with strong hands. Her heart was stronger still, carrying a willpower and love for family that's hard to match. She loved to read and she loved nature. She had a sixth sense about the soil and the earth and a knowledge of folk medicine passed down from her mother.

When Hatsuga was three the family was in dire poverty. The Gameki family that lived on the next farm made a great profit switching from brown and white rice to sticky rice last season and many other families in the area began to follow suit. Against his wife's advice Yamada invested heavily in sticky rice and their crop failed. It had failed harder than any other rice paddy in the marsh. For months the family survived on a broth made from cattails, dandelion shoots, tadpoles and whatever else would grow nearby. Sometimes, through begging or theft, they would get some rice and fish from the Gameki's.

Nishiki worked until her fingers were blistered, prayed to every god in heaven and earth and cried herself to sleep but nothing would grow in their paddy except a few anemic stalks of wild rice. While his wife worked Yamada found a temporary solution in his sloth. He had become a proficient shogi (Japanese chess) hustler and with his family's well being on the line his focus and resolve were unshakable. This skeleton of a peasant would walk in with his overbite and stupid monkey eyes and try to play a gentleman's game. Opponents would get overconfident, overbet, get frustrated and lose. On a good night they'd be cocky enough to play again for double-or-nothing.

It kept the family alive but Yamada's keen tactical instinct knew it was a losing battle. The hustler hunts best in the big city. The town was too small to have a lot of easy marks and once those were fleeced he'd be playing for conservative bets against smart players. Still, Yamada knew it was better than staying at home and impotently watching the crops die.

One day Hatsuga was pounding the thick husks off of the wild rice, holding the mortar with his tiny arms. His mother was planting a little more wild rice to keep their food supply going. Hatsuga saw small a beetle land on the surface of the water of the rice paddy. The bug struggled and flapped but its wings were too wet for it to take off. A big water skimmer bug zipped after it, gliding across the surface of the water on its long buoyant legs. Hatsuga was mesmerized by this water-walking insect and stepped into the pond to capture it. The water skimmer zipped off and little Hatsuga chased it to the deeper water. Suddenly he stumbled and fell. His sleeve got caught on a rusted rake at the bottom of the paddy. He shouted bubbles and breathed mud. Tiny feet thrashed, turned pale and floated to the water's surface.

He had a long dark dream about the god of plants and the god of fields. They had hung him from a stalk of bamboo a mile long and dangled him over pond full of giant fish. When he finally woke it was night time and his father was crying. His mother was shouting at his father, then she began crying too. Hatsuga rolled off his mat, got on his knees and coughed up the last of the marsh water that was in his lungs. He then vomited up a fair bit of mud and pebbles. His parents stopped crying.

A little after he turned four Hatsuga was headed to Daito Town with his father. If Hatsuga was good they would play shogi when they got there and if Yamada was fortunate and careful he'd win a little money from some other shogi players. On the way to town they found a shriveled old man in fancy clothes. The old man was on the brink of death, ghosts floated in his hollow eyes and single drop of crusted blood left a track from his nose. Yamada's first instinct was to steal the black lacquer case the man was holding and rifle through his pockets for money but Yamada had to set a good example for his son. They helped the man up and dragged him back to their humble home.

After a little food and water the man was well enough to talk. He was a ninja.

Hatsuga had seen ninjas once or twice before and heard about them when his mother read him stories but he had never talked to one.

Fading in and out of consciousness he told his story. The details were unclear but the facts of the past days' events came together. His name was Utsutsu of the Akimichi clan. He was on a deep-cover assignment which he had failed. He was supposed to meet another ninja then retrieve the box Yamada has found him with and a set of orders on where to deliver it. When he met his contact they were ambushed by a three-man taskforce from the Hidden Mist Village Academy. His contact was killed and his delivery instructions were destroyed. Utsutsu was holding off his opponents until their Jounin leader showed up. He consumed his family's special food pills and mortally wounded the Mist Jounin. The taskforce continued to fight and one of them had damaged his chakra system. With an immense effort he had escaped but the food pills he took during the battle had converted his body fat to chakra and they were starting to eat away at his bones and muscles. With his chakra system damaged he could not heal himself and he was wasting away so quickly he'd be dead in 24 hours.

Nishiki found the man's food pill containers and sniffed the traces of dust inside. She told Yamada to watch her son and their guest as she went off through the marsh toward the prairie that lied beyond. She returned at sunset with a basket full of flowers and mushrooms which she brewed into strange smelling broths and ground into pastes.

Dabbing the paste on the man's bruised chakra nodes and feeding him the potion helped ease his suffering somewhat. Utsutsu was more lucid and his color was returning. He told the family a shocking thing. He said they should drag him back to where they found him so that he may die. Kind hearted Nishiki wouldn't hear of it. She continued to make salves and was sure she could save this poor man's life. Seeing the determination in Nishiki's eyes Utsutsu knew he would never change her mind. From that point on he would make six hand signs and mumble something under his breath every few minutes.

That night the Mist Nin came. The came down the road on horseback, then up again on foot. Back and forth they would go, searching for days. Whenever they passed by Yamada hid the lantern and told his son to be extra quiet. The whole house was quiet and still except for Utsutsu's low but rapid whispering as he made his hand signs. Hatsuga could hear the Mist Nin talking. Every day they got louder and angrier with each other. They were horrible, hateful people who had nothing but contempt for the peasants. Hatasuga didn't know their names but he knew them. The was the boy with the white eyes and the foreign accent, the girl who could cover her hands with fire and their leader, the tall boy with the huge nin-dog. The boy with the white eyes would deride the girl that could cover her hands with fire for being a Genin then the boy with the nin-dog would tell them to both shut up so he could concentrate on following the trail, then he'd yell at his nin-dog for a while.

In the night faint but disturbing sounds could be heard through the stillness of the marsh. In the distance the family heard their neighbors screaming as the nin-dog was sicced on them and they were brutalized for information. One night a plume of black smoke and embers was seen towering over the Gameki's farm.

Once, just once, the girl of the group suggested they search the house of the Takekokus but the other two laughed at her idea. The house was obviously empty and the farm was abandoned they said. There was nothing but a half collapsed shack and an unplanted paddy.

After five brutal days the Mist Nin gave up on Daito Town and went searching for Utsutsu's trail in another direction. On the sixth day Utsutsu passed from this world. Nishiki's folk medicine was not strong enough to save his life but it, and the meager food supply the family shared with him, was enough to keep him going five days longer than he predicted. In return Utsutsu used his meager chakra supply to cover the house with some rare genjutsu or ninjutsu technique that blocked a nin-dog's powerful sense of smell and slipped a subtle but important thought into the back of three ninja's heads. That thought that saved the family's lives was just a subtle voice saying "Ignore this place. It's not important."

As he died Utsutsu thanked them for their endless generosity and said that his greatest regret in life was not his failed mission but that he could never repay the Takekokus for their kindness.

Nishiki and Yamada buried Utsutsu in secret beneath their millet patch. Yamada briefly considered keeping Utsutsu's sword but his wife convinced him that such a distinctive weapon would be a clue of their dealing's with Utsutsu. They used much of the money he was carrying to buy incense for him and they spent some time praying at the local shrine. The remainder of Utsutsu's money went into buying new rice seedlings and refurbishing the paddy.

The next season was good to the family. The millet came in very early and if the rice was any more perfect it would have picked itself. Nobody could say if it was a side effect of the food pills or the power of compassion and a heartfelt wish but in death Utsutsu's body fed the land with just the subtlest and slowest dosage of vital chakra. There was rice and millet to eat and rice left over to sell. Eating this food kept the family healthy and made Hatsuga grow tall. Once a rather frail and sickly child, Hatsuga barely caught as much a sniffle after the age of four.

With life happy and stable again Yamada seldom played Shogi with anyone but his son. He still didn't do much work. He'd regularly pack and sell the family's rice but usually is mind was on the case.

The black lacquered case that Utsutsu clung to for dear life that fateful night had become an all-consuming interest. It's contents were a pair of unusual iron cylinders covered in inscrutable seals and a number of jutsu teaching scrolls. Though Nikishi thought it would be best to destroy these incriminating goods Yamada insisted that their potential benefit to the family was enormous. Nikishi was adamant at first but after reading an intriguing intelligence report from the Shinobi Wars she became hooked into the mysteries of the case.

Yamada had deciphered his first scroll when his son was almost five.

"Hatsuga, I'm going to teach you a game. It's a bit like Shogi but more exciting I suppose. I think you'll like it, you have a lots of energy. We get two thick reeds. You take one and I take one. The ground is our board. The reeds, our hands and our feet are our pieces."

"Now try to swat me with your reed.
Close.
When you try to swat me like that I move like this.
Whup!
Now I move like this."

"Now do you remember the first time you tried to swat me. What did I do? Good! Then you went... Excellent! And if I go... yes! You learn so fast I'm so proud of you!"

Yamada would read the sword fighting scroll to his son and re-interpret for him in terminology of games and shogi strategy. The two became capable swordsmen (or at least stick men) and bonded well together. At dusk Yamada would put his skill to practical use fending off invading weeds in the millet patch with his machete. The family was getting crop production from almost all of their arable land.

When Hatsuga was six and a half the family coffer was filling quickly. The shack was fixed, the family had books to read and soft beds to sleep on. This was when Hatsuga's mother and father had a terrible argument. Nishiki accused her husband of being a thief and using the Kakuremino no Jutsu (Cloak of Invisibility Technique) to steal things from their neighbors while he was coming back from town. Yamada said this was ridiculous and that she had no proof. Nishiki's mist clone walked through the door, swore Nishiki's accusations were true and dissolved into a cloud of fog. Nikishi also said that the only reason they have so much rice is that she's been making water dolls to replace her lazy husband. Yamada left in disgust.

A few weeks later Nishiki and Hatsuga set off to look for Yamada. He was in the second place they looked, his cousin's house on the southern edge of Daito Town. Nishiki would have forgotten about her thieving husband altogether if not for the fact that she had missed her period and was pregnant with another child.

For his wife and new child Yamada agreed to come back and put in some work. The family also agreed that the scrolls and the things within them were a matter of utmost secrecy. They would only practice the techniques they contained on their property and in private. They also promised to study everything together.

The first jutsu Hatsuga learned was the Outflowing Water Meditation technique. It was taught to him and his father by Nishiki. Unlike her lazy husband who read select jutsus hoping to learn, use and profit as quickly as possible Nishiki read the long and spiritual dissertation on the chakra system and the control of chakra flow. Her thorough and thoughtful study gave her better chakra control than her husband could ever hope for. The family would walk out into the rice paddy, build up the chakra in the cores of their bodies and let it flow through the water into the plants, giving the plants strength and driving off the pests and disease that would feed on them. The family would go out in the moonlight, walking in a row, connecting to the life of the land and listening the the rice grow fat.

For once Yamada put in an honest day's work planting and picking the rice. Nishiki would send her water doll out to help when she was feeling well. Hatsuga would help however he could. At the age of seven he was pretty strong and almost as tall as his father. After a hard day's work father and son would light a stick of incense by Utsutsu's grave and spar with old rake handles until dinnertime.

The shack was too small for a family of three and it was certainly too small for a family of four. Happily some of the neighbor's moved out a while ago since they heard a lot of people around the marsh were getting robbed. Yamada agreed with them that the area is not what it used to be and the young ruffians in Daito Town were a terrible lot. He took the farm off of their hands for a very reasonable price.

A few months after the family moved into their new house Nishiki gave birth to Nidare. A small family shrine was built near Utsutsu's resting place. Yamada's cousin moved into the old shack and life was good. One by one the other three farms that surrounded the old Takekoku farm were bought up and Takekokus scattered all around the Land of Water came to work on it.with most of the hard labor being handled by workers the family had time to train in private behind their high garden fence. Yamada, Nishiki and Hatsuga became the world's smallest and newest ninja clan.

Nishiki was very keen on experimenting with chakra from and developing new jutsus. A lot of her work was focused on using her power to improve the farm so much of the adult's time was spent thinking of ways to get more from the land and water using ninjutsu. They had experimented with rapid plant growth. It was Hatsuga who made the suggestion of using giant bamboo for their experiments since it was the world's fastest growing plant. The experiments were generally unsatisfactory. Things that worked well on bamboo worked poorly on rice. Things that worked well on rice would only effect a few stalks at a time. After several weeks of poor results Yamada abandoned the idea and set his sights on more ambitious projects.

He wanted to climb the ladder of high society. While he was doing well he wasn't obscenely wealthy enough to buy his way in so he decided to make the wealthy come to him. Yamada began brewing small batches of premium sake'. While it's not one of he great brew houses bottles of Takekoku sake, with their distinctive water skimmer bug printed on the label, have become respected in some parts of Water Country.

The respect gained as a local artisan gave Yamada a call to higher ambition for the clan. On Hatsuga's eighth birthday to he was sent to a private tutor in Hidden Mist Village to study philosophy, history and politics. Hatsuga liked his lessons but didn't like Hidden Mist Village. He missed his family and his farm. He lived in an apartment so he could no longer keep a vegetable patch. The mist hid the sun most days and the smoke from the nearby imperial war foundry hid it the rest. The potted bamboo plants that he brought with him was one of the few natural things in his area of the city and even those might not have survived if he hadn't preserved them with lots of care and chakra.

After almost two years in Hidden Mist Village Hatsuga had seen things that changed him. He saw the Land of Water's military obsession and the madness it caused. He saw the Mist-Nin that ran roughshod all over his town six years ago marching their own squads through the streets. He saw students from the academy fighting secretly on top of the foundry, showing no mercy or humanity. The contrast was all the more jarring in compared to the thoughtful philosophies and ideas his tutors would teach him.

One day, while taking care of his plant a column of bowmen was marching down the street in front of his house. A furnace in the factory malfunctioned causing a terrible explosion. The explosion caused a family of starlings living on the roof of the foundry to take flight in panic. Some of the bowmen took cover, some ran, some prepared for battle. A red hot kunai blasted through the window of the foundry at incredible speed, striking a bowman in the face and killing him instantly. His crossbow discharged hitting a starling in flight. The starling lost control and flew though Hatsuga's window. Reflexively he caught it and the iron bolt pierced his palm. A drop of bird blood and a drop of human blood fell on a history book left on the floor.

To Hatsuga that moment felt like a hundred years. For a moment he felt a clarity that would put Sharingan to shame and make Byukagan feel like and old man's cataracts. He could see the chain of actions that put that bird in his hand clearly and every action connected to those. He could hear his plant grow, his own heartbeat and the breathing of a tiny bird over the shouting and the roaring inferno down the street.Every chakra node on his body felt like warm candle flame. In a daze he pulled the bolt from the bird's wing and it flew out the window. He then cleaned his palm and the cut had healed.

Then, as suddenly as this moment of mystical insight began it faded away. He could recapture snippets of that energy he felt that morning but it was more of a murky energy, not that maddening crystal clarity of that moment. His final month in Hidden Rain Village felt like a walking dream. The things he felt still haunted him and he returned to Daito Town a changed boy

PostSubject: Re: Character app. Hatsuga Takekoku (finished) 5 day bump   Character app. Hatsuga Takekoku (finished) 5 day bump EmptyTue Sep 30, 2008 10:44 am

While sparring with his father for the first time in over a year Hatsuga mentioned his intention to train as a ninja to his father. Yamada, either in surprise or anger lost control of his rake handle, smashing Hatsuga in the mouth. Eventually Hatsuga explained it to his father in terms he would appreciate. He made the argument that all of the most respected families have a strong ninja or military tradition and Hatsuga's tall stature, good work ethic and budding talents were the family's best hope for starting a tradition like that of their own. Since he was the oldest child by a large margin the dangerous academy at Hidden Mist Village was a poor decision, they'd have to find someplace else. It would also be a good idea to put some space between them and Hidden Mist village do to the stolen nin-scrolls they possessed.

This was just Hatsuga's cover argument. Hatsuga's true dream was to change the world with ninjutsu. Most wars had greed or ambition at their core. It was caused by people jealously guarding secrets, power and resources. What if ninjutsu's secrets were given to farmers and workers? What if, instead of crushing, cutting and flooding the powers of earth, air and water were used to reshape the land so people could eat and live without fear of drought or famine? In his mind's eye Hatsuga saw a world where summoned beasts plowed fields. He saw a world where masters of wind and lightning joined together to push hurricanes aside to spare tiny fishing villages. He saw a world where earth nin pulled ore from the ground and fire nin took it's precious metals and the smoky, loud foundries wouldn't explode and mangle unfortunate workers and soldiers.

He saw a world of enough so he sold his father the world of enough-is-never-enough.

To accomplish his vision he would need practice and research. What better place to start his research than the village founded by a ninja reputed to have grown a hundred trees in a day, a man who's ability to rebuild the land was unparalleled.? The footprints of the first Hokage were enormous but he would try to follow them. In his short life he saw two starving peasant become respected landlords and artisans and he believed that a peasant child could grow up and save the world from self-destruction.

The family formulated a plan.

Hatsuga studied the scrolls and texts as hard as he could. Once the chakra felt like a fishbone in the throat, something to be coughed up and forced out. Now it felt like a part of him. The family copied what they could of the scrolls. Yamada wrote an entire book mixing bad philosophy and shoji strategies that, if decoded revealed thousands of little known stances for several weapons.

One night while Hatsuga was supposed to be copying he began to fiddle with one of the iron cylinders. Sticking a pin into holes along the top cause it to click and rattle with the sound of tiny mechanical noises. Fascinated, Hatsuga experimented with the cylinder all night, eventually figuring out the mechanism. Little gears turned and the cylinder popped open. A piece of parchment with a faded sommoning sign and strange symbols fell ot of the cylinder. For the sake of curiosity Hatsuga carefully unfolded the parchment, pricked his finger with the pin, made the release handsigns and slammed his palm on the summoning seal.

He smacked the page a few more times to make sure then he pricked a finger on the other hand and tried it again. Nothing happened. He examined the odd artifact for a while, folded it back up and hid it in his books. He then screwed the lid back on the cylinder and placed it back in the case.

As the plan came together Hatsuga found that his fencing was better with a piece of fresh cut bamboo than a piece of long dead wood. Applying knowledge from old experiments with plants he found that he could make the bamboo work for him. Soon he could outmaneuver his father at swordplay. Nobody said it officially but that was the sign the time had come.

A mysterious message made it's way to the Mizukage's office:

"To who it may concern,
I am representing a group of international bounty hunters. Several months ago, off the coast of the Land of Moon we captured the ship of a dangerous criminal. Since he abandoned ship to save himself his ship and all possessions aboard it are considered abandoned in international waters and subject to maritime salvage law.

Amongst the items found was a case full of jutsu scrolls and two metal cylinders. I believe these belonged to you. Since a salvager is allowed to collect a percentage on found property and these worth of these rare texts is difficult to calculate a price of three silver bars would seem nearly adequate. In addition to this we request a blank voucher to train as a student at your ninja academy to be used at a later date. Some of our younger members, while excellent fighters, could use some additional training in the ninja arts.

If you are interested please send an unarmed courier with the documents and precious metal to the Cliffside Sushi Bar at Bondato Habor on the equinox. At noon have your courier request a triple order of sea urchin. We shall find you."

The day came, the time came, the order was placed. Nishiki was wearing a scarf and hood to cover her face when she greeted the courier. It was a small girl, a genin just out of the academy on her first assignment. She took the courier's package, examined it, put it in her bag and walked out, promising to lead her to the scrolls. The two strolled to the harbor where, buried in a stack of weather beaten boxes the lacquered case was hidden. The young genin took the case and in a dry and professional manner thanked Nishiki. As she turned away the genin whipped her head to the side. A tiny drugged senbon flew from her ponytail hitting Nishiki in the hand. From out of nowhere a muscle bound ANBU agent appeared. He lifted Nishiki off the ground by her neck with his massive forearm. Just as he was about to tear off his captive's scarf she melted away into a flood of seawater and flowed off the dock. The genin checked the bag left behind. There was nothing but a hole in the bottom.

As Yamada made his monthly rice delivery to the sushi bar he casually picked up the small black bag inner bag that contained the silver and documents. He placed it in the larger bag he was carrying and buried it in spare clothing. Hatsuga arrived on the cruise ship carrying his little brother on his back. His mother was already waiting in the ship. She had just watched her water clone get destroyed though one of the portholes. Just before the gangplank was pulled in Yamada leapt aboard. The family had a short vacation in the Moon Country and returned rested to start the second phase of their plan.

Yamada formulated the plan a while ago at a sake tasting contest in Hidden Mist Village. After the contest one of the prominent judges had drank a little two much and her lips were loose. She told Yamada that her son owned a large foundry in the area that had a lucrative weapon contract with the government. There was a terrible explosion at the foundry a few years ago and her son and daughter in law died in the fire. Her twin grandsons were the immediate heirs and having grown up around ninja weapons their entire life were proficient warriors at a young age. The two brothers hated each other and were literally liable to kill one another over the inheritance. After one of them enrolled in the academy the old woman had to pull some hefty political strings to make sure the other brother couldn't enter. The harsh training environment and deadly competition of the Mizukage's academy would be the perfect place for fratricide. She had gotten her other grandson a special pass to train at the Leaf Village Academy as sort of exchange student. The pass was currently unused as the angry heir made repeated futile attempts to enter the Mist Village Academy as well as attempts on his brother's life.

Then the elderly woman who cared so much for her grandsons passed out. Yamada led her back to her mansion with the greatest courtesy.

On the day of Hidden Mist Village's founding day festival Hatsuga visited that hated city for the final time. When he got to the mansion it seemed that everyone was drunk. The grandmother was drunk, the few security guards were far from sober and even Hatsuga's contact was tipsy with sake. Hatsuga thought it was a shameful state for someone not much older than he was. It took a while for his words to push through the heir's cloudy brain functions but the exchange was made. Hatsuga had his ticket to Konoha village. He looked back at the village one last time, took a whiff of the sulfurous firework air and spat.

A few weeks later Yamada set himself up with a small brewery on the coast of ther Land of Fire. He still has his rice imported special from the family farm in Daito Town. Nishiki was teaching Nidare reading, writing, math and ninjutsu. Her belly signals a third child on the way, conceived in Moon Country to be Born in the Land of Fire. Hatsuga arranged to rent a room in Konoha and planned his trip to the academy. With the stolen scrolls returned (mostly) and the Land of Water a good distance away the Takekoku's could find peace. Every new moon they still go to the temple and burn a bundle of incense for Utsutsu.

Hatsuga dangled his feet off the battered sampan. He took in his line and cast it back into the river. The old horse that pulled the boat up the river whinnied and reared. For just a second Hatsuga looked around, across the water, under the water searching for the near near invisible signs of other ninja. It was nothing, just a spooked horse. The old man who owned the boat calmed it down and their progress continued. Hatsuga sat back and let his fishing rod dangle.

Enormous stone eyes looked down at Hatsuga through the tree line then were obscured again. He was almost there. Hatsuga wondered what the people of Konoha would look like. Did they have the firm and noble features of their founder? What of Mrs. Sawaki, the old woman who's room he rented. Would she look like his grandmother? Hatsuga couldn't clearly remember his grandmother's face. She died when he was just a toddler.

"This is a wonderful country" Hatsuga said to the old boatman. "Good leadership. Good ninjas can make a good country or a good village, in this case literally, yet a bad country can make some very good ninjas at, least in terms of strength. Without good leadership power destroys itself and takes everyone with it. It goes from weather to a natural disaster."

The old man nodded sleepily in agreement. and tried to pay attention to steering the river. The line jerked. A large fish had taken the bait. Hatsuga stood up rocking the slender boat, the fishes thrashing threatened send all of Hatsuga's luggage tumbling overboard. As the boatman tried to steady them Hatsuga called up a water doll to grab the fish from below. Using a huge amount of concentration Hatsuga commanded the water doll toward the boat and landed his prey. Using a jutsu was probably more than neccessary but he chalked it up to some preliminary practice for the days ahead. He stabbed the fish in the back of the skull, killing it. It was big enough to share. He gutted and split it, leaving the old man the head half as a tip for his ride. He would cook the tail half and have dinner with Mrs. Sawaki as his way of saying hello.

Hmm..
Your first comment, thats fine, I like it.
Your second comment, I hate approving anyone without a backstory like this, as you can see on my app [Shukumei Naraku], whos backstory is still incomplete, even a character who has had a short life has a long story lol..

Approved.

Which is more annoying: an AS with 1 page of jutsu and an 8 page back story of an S-Rank Missing nin with 2 paragraphs of life story and 10 pages of jutsus?

You never said what the other thing was. [[You never used the word "or".]]

That is actually a Medical Ninjutsu of the C-Ranked or B-Ranked level. It needs to be removed.

I removed the offending jutsu.

I'm not totally sure how to fill in the chakra costs. Do the purely physical attacks like dynamic entry use as much chakra as ninjutsu?

It depends on how much Chakra is used. You do use Chakra during a Taijutsu attack; it's just much smaller than Nin/Gen Jutsus. It just depends on the attack.

As I stated a few posts back in my character application I don't know how to fill in chakra costs in light of taijutsus. DarkChaosPriestess wrote that taijutsu techniques use less chakra. How much less? Since nobody has bothered to explain it to me I am unable to fill in the chakra costs.

Here is a template on what you must use to configure your chakra costs

E: 5-19
D: 20-39
C: 40-59
B: 60-119
A: 120-199
S: 200+

You put in what you feel is a fair chakra cost per jutsu, if there are any objections a mod/admin will let you know which ones, if any need to be changed. sorry for no one telling you this previously.

Okay, filled in chakra costs and reduced my total jutsus to the numbers for an AS as indicated by the latest rules.

I don't mind the delay, until the academy opens it's a bit slow for students. Mostly it seems to be people training against logs and just missing-nin threatening to destroy villages for no specific reason around here.
