Basic Character Information:Name: Kataoka Nara
Age: 12
Gender: Female
Clan: Nara
Looks:Kata does not perhaps look as one would expect a Nara to look.
Hair: She has
dark blue thick hair, so dark it almost looks like black that shines
blue in the sunlight. Also, yes, her hair does shine (not as much as Lee from the original series though). Her hair is straight and reaches her feet when down, but she usually keeps it up in a twisted braid on the back of her head that reaches her shoulder blades. However, if she was to cut one part of the bander that keeps it up, it would fall loose. She has side bangs and a few strands of her hair fall in front of her face, especially when she feels shy. Kataoka's hair is seemingly light and free, reminding one of the ocean sometimes.
Eyes: Kata's eyes are a dull
brown, probably the least interesting thing about her. They do not have a pupil, and are rather small. However, if anyone ever begins talking about appearance with Kata, she always seems most proud of her eyes.
Other facial notices: Kata has one earring, a small
gold one, in her left ear. No markings.
Skin: Kataoka's skin is average; lighter than her father's but darker than her mothers. She has no scars or markings.
Build: Kata is short, only 5'2, and is lightweight as well. She has no figure as of yet, and still has a childish face. She is thin and delicate in appearance, reminding some of a lily. She seems breakable.
Clothes: Unlike most shinobi, Kataoka doesn't wear any specific outfit: she usually wears a wild mix of color clashing clothes. Most commonly she will wear a light
purple sweater that is missing its left sleeve, a black arm warmer on her left arm, a
pink glove on her right hand, a neon-
green sash across her torso, and a ripped-up white skirt over
blue shinobi pants. Her sandals are either grey or
brown. Kataoka wears her headband around her right arm. She regularly polishes it, making sure its very visible and gleaming.
Kata ALWAYS wears a bracelet with a kitten on it under her headband.
Personality:In short, Kataoka is a sensitive, gentle people-pleaser who will still stick up for herself but prefers to avoid conflict. She is quite smart, as is typical of the Nara clan, but she doesn't often state her opinions, as she is usually not the leader of a group and doesn't take up this position often.
Kataoka likes to quietly fit in with any group. She enjoys being with people, but not the center of attention. She is very interested in people and why they act the way they do, and one of her past times is just watching people, observing their ways.
Kata will listen to people talk about their troubles/lives for hours, simply listening and nodding and putting in the occasional comment. She is not a big talker and prefers listening to speaking. Like a shadow, if you don't pay much attention you may not even notice her in a group of people. Some believe this is why she wears the bright-clashing clothing, but she denies it.
Kata hasn't always been gentle and quiet, and was rather wild as a little girl. No one's really sure what happened to change her, as it happened over time and not suddenly, but now she would never hurt or tease an innocent. Some aren't sure she'd even hurt an enemy, and thus may not make it as a shinobi.
Being a people pleaser, Kataoka will occasionally let people take advantage of her in the ways of money and service; she'll allow a beggar to cheat her, or will work for free, or won't ask for the extra two ryo the client forgot to give her. Occasionally she'll even offer to take a mission for free. However, this also has its downsides; Kataoka's worst fear is not being accepted; being criticized, told nothing is right about her, or being told she's mean. She keeps this fear hidden by shrugging off many things and avoiding conflict/participation in debates.
Kataoka, however, will NOT let herself be abused; she has high dignity within herself and pride that she keeps hidden, but will show if she starts to feel threatened. She is talented in the Nara ability and is willing to use it whenever necessary. Kata is a confident girl, though she wasn't always. She is not personal, despite her kindness, and has a hard time making permanent friends because she doesn't really reach out to people in the way of friendship; she see's herself as their helper or confident leader, and nothing more.
Kataoka, despite her kindness to people, doesn't enjoy huge social commitments and will often sneak out of the picture to get some time by herself. Because of this social barrier, Kata tries to avoid making friends sometimes; she views friends as responsibilities.
As you can see, Kata is gentle but really has no set personality. If one word could be used to describe her it would be 'adapter', because she can be whatever is needed; in a talkative group she'll be silent and listen, while in a quiet group she'll engage others in conversation. When a group is confused she'll take leadership but the moment a leader arises she'll back down.
Oh, and she loves animals, especially dogs.

Elements: Earth (Doton)
Skills Specialties: Kekkei-gen-kai, ninjutsu
JutsuBasic Jutsu
- Spoiler:
Name: Kawarimi no Jutsu
Rank: E
Type: Ninjutsu
Element: N/A
Description:
This jutsu lets the user quickly switch places with another nearby
object, such as a plant (normally a section of a log), an animal, or
even another person within reach, leaving the opponent open to a
counter-attack. Explosive tags can be attached to the replacement for an
added surprise. Fundamentally, all ninja know this technique.
Name: Henge no Jutsu
Rank: E
Type: Ninjutsu
Element: N/A
Description:
This jutsu allows the user to assume the appearance of another person,
animal, or object. This is one of the basic jutsu taught at the Konoha
Ninja Academy. Fundamentally, all ninja know this jutsu. The
transformation jutsu is considered to be among the more difficult
E-ranked techniques, since it requires constant emission of chakra while
mentally maintaining the form. On top of that, the user would be, most
likely, interacting with the environment. This puts much mental strain
on the inexperienced ninja.
Name: Bunshin no Jutsu
Rank: E
Type: Ninjutsu
Element: N/A
Description:
This technique creates intangible copies of the user. The clones are
simply illusions and will dissipate when they come into contact with
something. The illusions can be seen through by the Byakugan and the
Sharingan. A person with normal eyes can also distinguish the clones
from the original, since the clones will not disrupt the area around
themselves with their movement (won't kick up dust, crush grass, etc.).
Name: Nawanuke no Jutsu
Rank: E
Type: Ninjutsu
Element: N/A
Description:
A basic jutsu taught at the Konoha Ninja Academy, this jutsu allows a
ninja to free themselves if they have been tied up.
Name: Genjutsu Kai
Rank: E-S
Type: Ninjutsu
Element: N/A
Description:
Kai is a Ninjutsu technique which allows the ninja to avoid the effects
of a Genjutsu illusion. After forming the needed handseals, the
Genjutsu technique will not affect the ninja. The ninja can also use the
technique on another individual who was unable to avoid the attack.
After forming the needed hand seals, the ninja touches the one affected
to end the affect of the spell.
Name: Shunshin no Jutsu
Rank: D-S
Type: Ninjutsu
Element: N/A
Description:
This jutsu is a high-speed movement technique, allowing a ninja to move
short to long distances at an almost untraceable speed. To an observer,
it appears as if the user has teleported. A puff of smoke is
occasionally used to disguise the user's movements. It is accomplished
by using chakra to temporarily boost the user's reflexes. The amount of
chakra required depends on the overall distance between the user and
their intended destination.
Name: Kinobori no Waza - Act of Tree Climbing
Rank: N/A
Type: Ninjutsu/Chakra Control
Element: N/A
Description:
Kinobori no Waza, the art of tree climbing serves a dual purpose.
Taking part in Kinobori Shugyou (Tree Climbing Training) helps a ninja
learn how to focus their chakra. It also teaches the ninja how to run up
trees and walk on vertical walls. The training helps the ninja learn
how to focus just the right amount of chakra to a particular part of
their body. The amount needed to climb is small but it must be precise.
The feet are regarded as the hardest location to master chakra focusing.
So by gaining the art of this skill, the ninja will have any jutsu
available (theoretically) because they will be able to focus their
chakra as needed.
Name: Suimen Hokou no Waza - Act of Water Surface Walking
Rank: N/A
Type: Ninjutsu/Chakra Control
Element: N/A
Description:
A variation on the Kinobori no Waza (Act of Tree Climbing), the art of
water surface walking allows a ninja to walk on water as if it was a
solid surface. Focusing an even amount of chakra out of the soles of
their feet, they can balance themselves on the very surface of the
water.
Name: Ayatsuito no Jutsu - String Reeling Technique
Rank: N/A
Type: Ninjutsu
Element: N/A
Description:
Ayatsuito no Jutsu is a Ninjutsu technique utilizing wire. This string
can be used in rappeling, or as a method to tie down and restrict the
movement of an opponent.
Name: Bikou Ninjutsu - Shadowing Stealth Technique
Rank: E
Type: Ninjutsu
Element: N/A
Description:
Bikou Ninjutsu is the technique ninjas use to follow their targets
covertly. The manner in which the ninja shadows their target can differ,
from the basic hiding under a nearby object, to using a jutsu to turn
oneself invisible.
Earth (Doton) Jutsu:- Spoiler:
Name: Moguragakure no Jutsu - Mole Hiding Technique
Rank: D
Type: Ninjutsu
Element: Earth (Doton)
Description: Doton • Moguragakure no Jutsu is a Ninjutsu technique utilizing the
Earth Element. This technique allows the ninja to burrow into the ground
and hide out of sight. This allows them to avoid attack or travel
underground.
Name: (mini) Doro Gaeshi - Miniature Mud Overturn
Rank: D
Type: Ninjutsu
Element: Doton
Description:
Doton • Doro Gaeshi is a defensive Ninjutsu technique utilizing the
Earth Element. After striking the ground with their hands, a large wall
of earth will rise into place as defense. The defense is not perfect
though, a hard or drilling impact can puncture the wall.
MINI Doro Gaeshi is the same, but smaller, offering protection for no more than three people all close together. It takes less chakra than Doro Gaeshi and is slightly weaker, thus making it a D rank technique.
Name: Retsudo Tenshou - Revolving Split Earth Palm
Rank: C
Type: Ninjutsu
Element: Doton
Description:
Doton • Retsudo Tenshou is a Ninjutsu technique utilizing the Earth
Element. This technique allows the ninja to control nearby stone and
rock. When the ninja forms the needed handseals and slams their palm to
the ground, surrounding rock will begin to churn and twist up crushing
all those trapped within it.
Clan Jutsu:
- Spoiler:
Name: Shadow Possession Jutsu
Rank: D
Type: Ninjutsu
Element: --
Description: The user performs a single hand sign, allowing them to control their shadow. They then extend their own shadow to connect with the shadow of another person. When the connection happens, the user has complete control of the movements of the person caught in the shadow; the person mirrors the user, doing whatever the user does moments after they do it. This Jutsu takes a constant drain of chakra, and Genin usually cannot hold this for more than five minutes (depending on amount of people they are attempting to hold, and how much chakra they have), Chunin for thirty minutes, Jonin for an hour or more. Genin can hold up to five people, Chunin fifteen, Jonin as many as they have chakra for.
Name: Kage Kubi Shibari no Jutsu - Shadow Neck Bind Technique
Rank: D+
Range: close to mid range (0-10 meters)
Type: Ninjutsu
Element: --
Description: Kage
Kubi Shibari no Jutsu is a Ninjutsu technique developed by the Nara
clan. To perform the technique the clan member will first bind their
target using the Shadow Possession technique. Once the target can no
longer move, they form the needed hand seal to initiate this technique.
The clan member uses their shadow to form a hand which will creep up
their opponents body to their neck. Once the hand reaches the neck, it
will constrict in such a manner so as to strangle the opponent. However,
the clan member will need to be careful. If their target has a lot of
chakra, they can turn back the shadow hand and prevent it from binding
their neck.
Note: you must be two ranks higher than the user of this Jutsu or must have an exceptionally high chakra level (stated in your profile or because of a Jutsu/weapon effect) to escape. For those that are two ranks higher or more, they can break the jutsu the post after they were effected by it. But those who simply have high chakra must wait two posts.
A genin can use the Kage Kubi Shibari no Jutsu for one-two minutes before having to release it. A chunin can use it for five-ten minutes (depending on remaining chakra), and a Jonin from thirty minutes to an hour (opponent may be dead by this time ^^).
History and RP sample:History:Birth and Early Days:Kataoka was born in Konoha, as were her most of Nara relatives before her. However, unlike most of her Nara ancestors, Kataoka did not have two Nara parents, or even two parents from Konoha; her mother had married a man from the Land of Birds, from a completely different people.
Her father, Okato, had a different bloodline, and came from a clan that all looked the same, and used lots of genjutsu. Her mother, Kamina, was full-blood Nara and had the basic appearance found commonly among Nara; brown hair and small brown eyes. She fell in love with Okato on a mission to the Land of Birds, and they got married four months later. Okato agreed to leave his clan so Kamina would not have to leave Konoha, and so he received citizenship there two weeks later.
Okato was not a shinobi, though he could have been if he had chosen. He was the third born son of the leader of his clan, and so he had high standing but was not required to stay in the Land of Birds. He was a rich man, but had been taught to handle his money well. He was kind but prideful, and never would let his dignity drop an ounce; he would avoid shame or embarrassment at all costs.
Kamina, on the other hand, was a shinobi, a Special Jonin who didn't intend to rank any higher (she had excuses, but truly she was just too lazy), and was happy with the road life had put her on. She was a substitute trainer for Academy Students in her spare time, and enjoyed being around children. She was an only child.
Kataoka was born a year after her parents married. Her name means 'hill on the side', and though it has significance, Kataoka has yet to figure out why. Her father Okato was unhappy to have had a daughter instead of a son, but once he saw how much Kataoka looked like him, his pride melted and he couldn't help but love her.
Thus, Kataoka was born.
Her mother Kamina Nara immediately planned for Kata to be a Shinobi, just as she was. Her father, on the other hand, wanted her to grow up as a lady; he didn't want his own daughter to be better at fighting than he was. Because of their different plans for Kataoka, Kamina and Okato began to fight a lot when Kata was just a year old. Finally, after asking her mother what to do, Kamina told Okato that if their next child was a boy, Kata could grow up a lady, but if it was a girl, Kata would become a shinobi. Okato agreed.
So two years later (they were busy and for a while didn't have time for more children) Kamina had... twins! So now what? They finally decided they would let Kataoka decide when she was four, which was the age she could go to the academy.
(special Note: Kataoka's siblings are unnamed here in case anyone would like to use them in the future. They would have to start out as Academy students, but could soon become Genin ^_^)So time passed (A year that is), and soon Kata was four. Her parents had never cut her hair *random side note*. It was time for her to decide what she liked better... being a lady, or being a shinobi.
Guess what she chose?
Academy Days:Kataoka joined the Academy at the age of four, and proved to be exceptionally smart. She was a teacher's pet, loved by almost all adults around her. She did her studies and asked questions; she was not shy... that is, until other kids realized that she was, in a way, a geek.
When she was six the teasing started. At first it was just a jest here and there. Then it got more intense. When she told the teacher, the ones who teased her got in trouble... but it only increased their hate for her, and now she was just ignored. This was the time she started learning to watch people, to see what they thought of you and how they were going to act, to see if you should talk to them or just stand back. This was the basis for her current hobby of watching people.
And so, at six years old, with a busy mother, an important father and very young siblings, Kataoka felt lonely. But she did not let this effect her performance at the Academy; she viewed her feelings and her studies as two separate things, and so continued learning to read and write and throw kunai. She learned to tolerate being alone, and she learned to play by herself. She dreamed of being a strong Taijutsuist, kicking and punching all who stood in her way. But alas, Taijutsu is not the way of the Nara.
When Kataoka was seven her mother realized that she was very smart and had potential, and so she began explaining the way of the Nara to Kata. She wondered if her daughter had inherited the Nara ability or the Genjutsu of her father; either way, she wanted her daughter to be educated.
Kata was no longer alone at the academy; her five-year-old siblings had both wanted to be shinobi, like their big sis, and so she studied with pride and was a good example to them. She was still tops in her studies, but the bullying had started up again, and now she didn't tell the teacher; she felt too prideful to ask for help. Perhaps this was inherited from her father's noble background.
At eight, Kata finally found a friend, a girl who stuck up for Kata and stopped the bullying. This friend, named Jiun, was new to Konoha and had just moved their with her parents, but had been at a different academy before. Immediately Kata clicked with this girl, but Kata never was the leader of the friendship; she just did whatever Jiun liked doing, and followed her like a shadow.
Unfortunately, Jiun began getting into bad habits when she and Kataoka were nine. She began sneaking out of class, slacking on homework, and mouthing off to the teacher; and she encouraged Kata to do the same. Kata never mouthed off to the teacher or did anything publicly 'low', but being a people-pleaser and not wanting to lose her friendship with Jiun, she did begin to slip on her studies and spend more time playing ninja and picking flowers than she did reading and studying her beginner Jutsu. When the teacher noticed Kata's grades beginning to slip, he asked her about this, and for the first time ever, she lied to his face (she had lied to others, but NEVER to a respected teacher), claiming she studied as hard as she could but didn't understand it.
She felt bad for lying shortly after, and wanted out of the bad habits she had formed, but she didn't know how to tell Jiun. Lucky for her, Jiun's parents soon found out and scolded her firmly. Thus, Kataoka began getting her grades back up, but she never admitted she lied. Hearing about her drop in grades, Kata's mother began training her extra hard as well. Because of this Kataoka formed discipline and willpower, though she still has a hard time with the willpower part.
Genin Test, a Friend Leaves:At age ten, Kataoka first took the test for Genin. She and Jiun hoped to be on the same squad, and joked about having an 'all girl squad'. Kataoka had lots of chakra for her age, but little control of it; she preferred reading and writing to practicing Jutsu, and had especially been discouraged when her mother had told her that Nara 'just don't do Taijutsu.'
Jiun was the opposite way, with less chakra but lots more control over it, and a natural strength and speed. They assumed that they completed each other and would naturally be put on the same team.
But...
the day before the test, Jiun came to Kataoka's house crying. When Kata asked her to explain, she blurted out that her parents were moving because her father found a place that got him more income, where they could live in a bigger house and have lots of pets and a personal trainer for Jiun; something that every serious shinobi would love, but not Jiun. She cried and cried; Kataoka didn't shed a tear. She just sat there, stunned.
She felt if she cried she would be letting Jiun down; she felt that she was Jiun's helper right now, and Jiun did NOT need someone she looked up to to cry. So Kata didn't cry a bit, just sat there hugging Jiun stiffly; she wasn't one to touch people much, so hugging was rather new for her. Little did she know that Jiun viewed this as Kata showing she wanted the friendship to end, because she didn't cry.
Still, Jiun gave Kata a bracelet and told her to always wear it to remember their friendship. Kata agreed. It was a metal band with a kitten on it.
And so, Jiun and her family left that evening. Kataoka suddenly realized she was alone again, and so she was unprepared and distant the next day during the test. She failed her first Genin test, mainly the written exam.
Her teacher immediately knew what was getting to her, and had a long talk with her after the test. Kataoka told him everything about how Jiun was her only friend, and for the first time since she was four, she cried in front of an adult that wasn't her mother or father.
But Kata soon learned that life moves on, and you must as well.
Kata's mother was disappointed in her failure, and so worked her extra hard, re-teaching her all the academy Jutsu and making her practice each one at least thirty times a day, in addition to beginning to learn to move her shadow.
When Kataoka was eleven years and nine months, she learned the Shadow Possession Jutsu, and knew all the academy Jutsu; she took the Genin exam and passed.
Now, at age twelve, Kataoka has left the comfort of being with other clan Genin (AKA not in an official squad) to seek her own squad. She has grown a lot since her friend left, and still wears the childish kitten bracelet, now hidden under her headband on her left arm.
Kataoka's nindo is 'to protect the people of Konoha, and understand the ways of all.'
RP Sample:Kataoka stared out across the open fields. This was one of her favorite places to be, a place where she could be alone and away from responsibility and people. She sighed happily, and set down the many things she carried out there; her two pens, one notebook, and one pencil. She had come to sketch the fields before her, but now, she felt an urge to train.
She looked around; it was just a grassy field, with no trees for a long ways. There was, however, a rather large dip in the field that was filled with water; a mini-pond, which even had a duck in it. She walked over to the pond, and the duck began quacking with alarm.
"
Go away," she said simply, watching the duck paddle around.
"
There is no food for you in that water anyway. It's pointless to be there." Yet she knew it wasn't pointless; perhaps the duck was there for the same reason she had first come. To relax, to get away. Things that were a waste of time, according to her mother.
Kata dashed out onto the water, her primary thought being to keep herself above the water... but going so fast with so much chakra, she had gotten over-excited and knew immediately that she would soon have wet feet (she was barefoot today).
splash!
She watched the duck fly away, then looked down at her own feet; the water was shallower than she had thought, and only the base of her blue ninja pants got wet.
"
Let's try this again..." she said, stepping out of the water. She preffered to do this training barefoot, as it gave her more 'feel', but she knew she should really practice with shoes. Ah, well. Maybe when she got a squad, a Jonin would make her do that. She put her hands together to form the chakra-moving hand sign, and slowly stepped out onto the water, one foot at a time.
Step by step, she moved farther out, until she was in the middle of the large puddle. She slowly let her hands drop to her side and looked down.
"
Just as I estimated; you're only six inches deep here," she said to the water. She smiled. She was glad she had decided to train instead of draw. It was always hard to start working, but once she started, it always made her happier than sitting around doing nothing did.
She looked up into the sky, and watched as the same duck from earlier flew over, announcing his presence.
"
You're getting some training, too, my friend." she said, smiling.
And with that, she headed home.
